Character Unit - How do authors develop themes throughout a text?

During this unit, we will be closely reading different texts to see how authors develop themes like love and fear.  At the end of the unit, we will have a Socratic Seminar to discuss our driving question, and use evidence from literature to support our claims.

Literature we are using as evidence:

"Annabel Lee," by Edgar Allen Poe

Excerpt from The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins
"The Reaping Scene" from The Hunger Games
Ask yourself: How does the author create the mood/feeling in this scene? What techniques does he/she use?

      "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson

Summarize the scene that made you think of the signpost.

       Sounds like:

       In this scene…

      This line…

      The character says/thinks…

(RL.7.2 – provide an objective summary of the text)

Explain why you think this scene represents the signpost.

       Sounds like:

      This shows…

      This explains…

      This means…

      The character realized…

(RL.7.1 – use textual evidence to support a central idea)

      Answer the anchor question.

(RL.7.2 – Determine theme or central idea and analyze its development over the course of the text

RL.7.3 – Analyze how elements of a story interact)

Use transitions to show that quotes and evidence come from the text.

       Sounds like:

      According to…

In the beginning of the story…

      The character says…

       The author states…

      In this line…

(RL.7.1– use textual evidence to support a central idea

W.7.2c – use appropriate transitions to show relationships among ideas)

Offer more than one possible answer to the anchor question.

You and your partner are responsible for collecting evidence from our 4 texts to discuss the following questions:
      1. What similarities did you find between the texts?
      2. Which author did the best job developing the theme: LOVE?
      3.  Which author did the best job developing the theme: FEAR?
      4.  Which is a more powerful drive for characters: LOVE or FEAR?
